Paphos suits travellers who want a Mediterranean holiday with something to see beyond the beach. It is the natural choice if you like walking around ruins in the morning, swimming in the afternoon and eating dinner by the harbour while the sun goes down. It also works well for slower-paced trips, longer stays and shoulder-season travel, because the town keeps functioning outside the peak summer weeks rather than closing down.
Atmosphere and setting
There are really three Paphos areas. Kato Paphos, around the harbour and the UNESCO-listed archaeological site, is the tourist heart: promenades, tavernas, castle views and easy strolling. Upper Paphos, the old town, is where locals shop and eat, with a market and a quieter, more ordinary Cypriot rhythm. Then there is the coastal strip running north-west towards Coral Bay, which is largely resort development set among low cliffs and small coves. Overall the pace is calm compared with the eastern resorts.
Getting there and getting around
Paphos International Airport is close to the town, which keeps transfers short — a big advantage if you are travelling with young children or arriving late. Local buses connect the harbour, the old town and Coral Bay, and taxis are easy to find in the tourist areas. However, hotels here are spread over a long coastal strip, so if your accommodation is outside the centre or you want to reach the Akamas peninsula, the Troodos foothills or the wine villages, hiring a car makes a real difference.
Suitability for families
Families are well served, particularly in the Coral Bay direction where the sand is softer and the water shelves gently. Many larger properties are built around pool complexes, which matters because not every Paphos beach is a wide sandy bay. The short airport transfer and the mix of ruins, boat trips and water parks nearby make it a practical base for a first family trip to Cyprus.
Suitability for couples
This is one of the strongest areas on the island for couples. The west-facing coast means genuine sunset views from the seafront, there is a good spread of quieter and adults-only style properties away from the busiest streets, and the harbour and old town both give you somewhere to walk in the evening that is not a nightlife strip.
Nightlife: relaxed
Evenings are relaxed rather than loud. Expect seafront restaurants, cocktail terraces, live music in bars and a small cluster of later-opening venues near the harbour. If a club-focused holiday is the priority, Ayia Napa is the better fit; if you want dinner and a drink somewhere pleasant, Paphos delivers that comfortably.
Typical accommodation available
The mix leans towards mid-range and upper-tier coastal resorts, plus self-catering apartments in and around Kato Paphos and a strong supply of private villas — many with their own pool — in the hills and villages inland. Boutique and restored stone properties appear in the old town and surrounding villages, and simpler apartment blocks are common near the town centre.
