Where to stay in Cyprus

Ayia Napa

Famous beaches, lively atmosphere and plenty of resort options.

Why stay in Ayia Napa?

Best for beaches and nightlife. The guide below covers what the area is actually like, how easy it is to get around, and who tends to enjoy it most.

  • Nissi Beach, Makronissos and the Cape Greco sea caves
  • Wide range of resorts, apartments and adults-only hotels
  • Water sports, boat trips and a busy summer season

Who Ayia Napa is best for

Ayia Napa suits travellers who want famous beaches and a resort that is fully awake in summer. Groups of friends, younger travellers and anyone who enjoys water sports, boat trips and busy beach clubs will find the most here. It is also, contrary to its reputation, a workable family destination — provided you choose where you stay carefully.

Atmosphere and setting

The resort has two distinct personalities. Around the central square and the streets running off it, the atmosphere is loud, neon and late, particularly from June to September. Away from that core — towards Nissi, Makronissos, Ayia Thekla or the marina — it is much calmer, with wide sandy beaches and standard resort hotels. Outside high season the town becomes noticeably quiet, which some travellers prefer.

Getting there and getting around

Larnaca Airport is roughly 45 minutes to an hour away by road. Inside the resort, walking and taxis cover most needs, and buses link Ayia Napa with Protaras and the surrounding villages. A car is not essential for a beach-focused stay, but it helps for exploring Cape Greco, the sea caves and quieter beaches along the coast, and for avoiding peak-season taxi demand at night.

Suitability for families

Families do stay here, and the beaches are among the best on the island for it — broad, sandy and shallow. The key is location: hotels near Nissi Beach, Makronissos or the western edge of town give you the sand without the late-night noise of the centre. Water parks, boat trips and a marine life attraction give children plenty to do beyond the beach.

Suitability for couples

Couples tend to split into two camps. If you want a social holiday with beach clubs and late evenings, the centre is ideal. If you want a quieter trip, look at adults-only or spa-focused properties on the outskirts, where you get the same coastline with a much calmer setting.

Nightlife: very lively

The strongest nightlife scene in Cyprus, concentrated in a compact area around the square, with bars, clubs and events running through the summer. It is loud, and sound carries — this is the single most important thing to check when comparing hotels here. Outside the summer months the scene largely pauses.

Typical accommodation available

A very wide range: large all-inclusive resorts, adults-only and spa hotels, self-catering apartments, budget studios and villa rentals in the residential districts. Because the supply is so broad, filtering by location within the resort matters more here than almost anywhere else in Cyprus.
